Belarus within International Educational Environment

The national educational system of the Republic of Belarus is successfully developing and occupies a worthy place within international educational environment. According to the Human Development Index, Belarus is included in the group of the most developed countries in the world and has the best rank among the CIS countries. The Education Index ranks Belarus the 30st. In 2015, Belarus joined the European Higher Education Area, which underlines the high level of education in the country. The ratio of students to the total population is one of the highest in Europe.

Why Belarus?

Belarus is located in the centre of Europe, it shares borders with Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia. Belarus, in a way, is a crossroads with the most important trans-European railways and highways, oil and gas pipelines, water and air routes uniting Europe and Asia converging.

The Republic of Belarus has a multi-stage educational system consisting of pre-school, general secondary, vocational, specialized secondary, higher and postgraduate education.

There has been a dynamic development of the educational system of the Republic of Belarus. More than 300 scientific organizations, universities and large manufacturing enterprises carry out scientific research and development. The academic staff of the Belarusian universities consists of highly skilled specialists. Education in the Republic of Belarus is aimed at high quality training in accordance with international standards and the highest level of practical studies.

Diplomas and degree certificates of the Republic of Belarus are recognized by the CIS and the European Union states.

The Republic of Belarus offers educational programs for different level of education that attract foreign students:  bachelor’s and master’s degree  programmes in English, double degree programmes, programmes of further professional education and advanced training, summer schools, Russian language courses.

Educational institutions of the Republic of Belarus actively cooperate with such international organizations as UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, with the European Union, the Council of Europe, European centers of professional improvement, etc.

Higher education institutions take an active part in international educational and scientific exhibitions, fairs and different conferences, which helps to establish and consolidate contacts at the level of governments, ministries, departments, educational institutions and professional associations.

The admission process to Belarusian universities is quite simple and transparent. There are no difficult entrance exams and international certificates of foreign language proficiency (IELTS, etc.) are not required. Studying in Belarus gives an excellent opportunity to immerse in life, culture and traditions of the country, to make new useful contacts.

Higher education in the Republic of Belarus

Professional and scientific training of students is covered by 52 higher education institutions of different education profiles, including architecture and construction, engineering and technology, art and design, humanities, natural sciences, environmental sciences, health science, etc.

The main medium of instruction in Belarusian higher education institutions is Russian. Foreign students can learn it at preparatory departments of universities or at language courses. A number of universities offer education in English both at the first (Bachelor’s program) and the second (Master’s program) stage of education.

Foreign students can choose any of the following educational programs, depending on the level of education and training:

  • Preparatory department (from 7 to 9 months);
  • Language courses (from 1 to 10 months);
  • Bachelor's programs (from 3 to 6 years);
  • Master's programs (from 1 to 2 years);
  • Postgraduate training programs (from 3 to 4 years);
  • Doctoral programs (from 2 to 3 years).

In order to improve the image of the Belarusian system of higher education the government of the Republic of Belarus creates favourable conditions for comfortable staying, living and studying of foreign citizens in the country.

Centre for International Cooperation in Education

In 2012, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus authorized the NIHE Centre for International Cooperation in Education. The Centre for International Cooperation in Education is the official state organization, which carries out activities to attract foreign citizens to study in Belarusian higher education institutions, as well as searching for partners providing intermediary services in selection of candidates in various countries for training in the Republic of Belarus. The Centre also consults and informs the foreign citizens, wishing to study in the Republic of Belarus, on rules and admission procedure in our country, academic mobility, scholarships opportunities.

The Centre assists in addressing practical issues on getting invitations for entry to the Republic of Belarus, application procedure, medical care and insurance.

At present, the NIHE Centre for International Cooperation in Education is a team of specialists ready to help in organizing education in the Republic of Belarus.
