On Belarus Ambassador's Meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq

On 1–3 September 2026, Ambassador of Belarus to Türkiye and Iraq concurrently, Anatoli Glaz, is paying a visit to Baghdad, during which he held a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq Fuad Hussein.

 

The main focus of the talks was on opportunities to reactivate Belarusian-Iraqi cooperation. In this context, the sides discussed a range of practical bilateral issues as well as the regional agenda.

 

The parties addressed the resumption of the work of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, the holding of consultations between the foreign ministries, the intensification of contacts between the business communities of the two countries, and the completion of the coordination of several intergovernmental agreements.

 

The sides had a detailed discussion on trade and economic cooperation, including logistics, prospects for the supply of Belarusian pharmaceutical products, and the implementation of cooperation projects.

 

Ambassador Anatoli Glaz handed over copies of his Letters of Credence to Fuad Hussein and conveyed an invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus to visit Minsk, including within the framework of the Eurasian Security Conference planned for November 2026.

 

In Baghdad, separate talks were held with Abdul Amir al-Shammari, Head of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Iraq. The discussions focused on regional security, the situation in Iraq, and promising areas of bilateral cooperation, including the exchange of experience and the expansion of contacts between the competent authorities of the two countries. Ambassador Glaz also conveyed congratulations from Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Ivan Kubrakov on his appointment to the new high-level position.

 

Belarus reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, as well as to the settlement of differences through political and diplomatic means.

 

During a meeting with Faik Zidan, Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Republic of Iraq, particular attention was paid to further developing cooperation between the relevant institutions of the two countries and implementing the agreements reached following Mr. Zidan’s visit to Minsk. Certain humanitarian issues were also discussed.

 

The prospects for comprehensive development of cooperation in the energy sector, opportunities to assist in the modernization of Iraq’s power system, and the supply of relevant components were discussed in detail during talks with Minister of Electricity A. Saadi Whaib.

 

As part of the business programme, a closed-format business forum was held, along with a series of substantive meetings with representatives of the Iraqi business community. The Belarusian side was also represented by Yuri Pokhodnya, Director General of the State Enterprise “Managing Company of Belpharmprom Holding”, and Oleg Katovich, representative of Borisov Medical Preparations Plant OJSC. The parties discussed practical areas of cooperation in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industry, energy and the supply of Belarusian machinery.

 

In an interview with the state television channel Al Iraqiya, Anatoli Glaz spoke to Iraqi viewers about modern Belarus, the prospects for Belarusian-Iraqi relations, and Belarus’ approaches to issues of peace, sovereignty and security.
